The new Cannabis Regulations & how they’ll impact your practice

By

Edibles, extracts & topicals, oh my!

While the new Cannabis Regulations came into force on October 17, 2019, Health Canada requires cannabis companies to submit their products for a 60-day review. As a result, December 17 is the first day that cannabis edibles, topicals and tinctures are permitted to be sold in stores across Canada, and an appropriate day to launch this seminar. Are you ready to ‘dispense’ your knowledge of the Act and Regulations to your clients?

This CPD program will interest lawyers practicing:
– litigation – product liability, CPG issues, supply chain issues
– criminal – Cannabis Act & Cannabis Control Act, 2017 offences, and
– corporate – supplier & joint venture contracts, financing, business acquisitions

As if Cannabis Legalization 1.0 wasn’t challenging enough, now lawyers have to deal with Cannabis Legalization 2.0 – the new and improved Cannabis Regulations that legalize and regulate “edibles, extracts and topicals.”

What are all these new product lines? What are the rules regarding packaging and dosing, promotion and advertising? And most importantly, where can I buy them?

Join moderator, cannabis lawyer and author Russell Bennett on a pre-holiday journey with a panel of experts to answer all your cannabis consumption questions that may have you admitting, “We’re not in Kansas anymore.”

Speakers:
– Patrick Cummins, Co-Chair of Blaney McMurtry LLP’s Cannabis Group and ranked in the 2020 Edition of Best Lawyers® in Canada for his work in Cannabis Law.
– Ruth Chun, former General Counsel for Newstrike/UP Cannabis and HEXO Corp., now cannabis lawyer at Chun Law Professional Corporation.
– Barbra Miller, Partner, Civil Litigator and member of the Aird & Berlis LLP Litigation and Workplace Law Groups.

Moderator:
– Russell Bennett, B.Sc., LL.B., author of Canada’s Cannabis Act: Annotation and Commentary, published by LexisNexis, and the founder of Cannabis Law, a soonto- be full-service cannabis industry law firm based in Toronto.

Substantive Content will include:

– Packaging and labelling restrictions and allowances
– The promotion and advertising prohibitions:
the challenges of competition with the illicit Canadian market and the US market, and
comparing the prohibitions to those of tobacco and alcohol
– THC dosing and prohibited ingredients
– Protections for youth regarding purchases and consumption
– Product liability – personal injury, contamination, 3rd party claims
– Are restaurants and bars covered in the Cannabis Regulations?
– Are there restrictions for home creation and consumption?

This program is accredited for 15 minutes of Professionalism Content and 1.25 hours of Substantive Content.

Many thanks to our generous sponsor: Lexis Nexis

Registration Fee:
– Members $90.00 + HST
– Member Licensing Candidates and New Calls $20.00 + HST
– Non-Members and Friends of the TLA $120.00 + HST

Complimentary tickets are available for Law School Students. Please contact Sandra Porter at events@tlaonline.ca.

SMLS Public Lecture – “Cannabis in Canada: Edibles and Other Updates”

By

The Canadian Institute of Resources Law invites you to attend a free public lecture entitled:

“Cannabis in Canada: Edibles and Other Updates”

This session will address upcoming changes to Canada’s cannabis laws, along with other developments that have occurred in the year since decriminalization. It will explore the new federal rules governing edible cannabis, cannabis extracts, and topical cannabis, set to come into effect on October 17. The regulations address various issues, including the composition of these products, packaging, labeling, and the protection of young people. This session will also provide critiques of these new rules, the responses of provincial and municipal governments, and some of the anticipated policy challenges. Other important legal developments include the availability of pardons for those previously convicted of cannabis possession and a variety of provincial and municipal laws addressing such issues as taxation, private versus public sales, public consumption, and the legal age to possess cannabis. We will discuss the changing legal landscape, and critically evaluate how well cannabis laws are working. The session will end with a Q & A period for registered participants.

Lorian Hardcastle will be the presenter

Dr. Lorian Hardcastle is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary, where she is also a member of the O’Brien Institute for Public Health. She obtained her J.D. with a Health Law and Policy Specialization Certificate from Dalhousie University, and her masters and doctorate from the University of Toronto.
